14/04/2021
The Sandringham Zebras are pleased to announce their leadership group for the 2021 VFL season as voted on by players, staff, and coaches.
Daniel Coffield was selected as the clear standout for the captaincy role, and he will be assisted by Goy Lok and Chris Carey in vice-captaincy roles with Luke Dalmau and Anthony Seaton rounding out the five-man leadership group.
Captain, Daniel Coffield commented on his new role.
"Obviously (I'm) very humbled to be selected as captain," he said.
"it was not something I was ever really expecting or had my sights on when I first got to Sandy, but (I'm) really excited to lead the group and develop my own leadership and relationship skills for both footy and work life."
Head coach, Jake Batchelor also gave his thoughts on the selections.
“We think the playing squad has found a great mix of leadership and football traits to form our leadership group,” he said.
“These five have been clear standouts over the preseason, and it’s no surprise their teammates value their leadership.”
The group features a mix of experience and youthfulness, and Batchelor is excited about the prospect.
“Coff(ield) will be a great captain and having Chris and Goy by his side for support will allow him to flourish.”
“Luke and Anthony are both young and raw in the VFL system so to be given this acknowledgement is a great reward for effort so far.”
“We all look forward to seeing them progress as people and footballers throughout the year.”
Leadership Group
Captain — Daniel Coffield
Coffield is a versatile defender who was recruited to Sandringham from Richmond VFL.
In 2019, he was part of the Tiger’s VFL premiership winning side and also took out the Guinane Medal as the team’s Best and Fairest.
Coffield brings experience and knowledge to the role having also been a part of Richmond's leadership group.
Coffield is the brother of Saint, Nick Coffield.
Vice-Captain — Goy Lok
Lok is a tough inside-out midfield who runs hard all day.
A former Sandringham Dragon, he was recruited to Sandringham after stints at Casey and Frankston where most recently, in the 2019 season, he finished 3rd in the club best and fairest.
Lok is well respected by his peers, having been voted by the VFL Captains as a likely winner of the J. J. Liston Trophy (competition best and fairest)
Lok is strong and tough on the field and he leads by example — his positive energy is vital to the club's success we are excited to see how he leads from the front in 2021.
Vice-Captain — Chris Carey
Carey is an experienced VFL campaigner having previously played with Port Melbourne.
A marking forward who is tough to beat one-on-one and can also provide ruckwork, Carey convincingly won the league best and fairest in the Southern Football and Netball League with East Malvern in 2019.
Carey will bring experience and quality to the group, and he is sure to be an asset to the Sandringham leadership group and football club for the 2021 season and beyond.
Luke Dalmau
Dalmau is no stranger to leadership.
A former Dandenong Stingrays captain, Dalmau led the team to the top of the ladder and finals.
Dalmau has most recently played for the Pines Football Club in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League.
A tough, contested player who can go forward, back or into the midfield, Dalmau is a welcome addition to the Sandringham lineup and will be able to provide leadership across the ground.
Anthony Seaton
Seaton is the youngest of the group, but what he lacks in age and experience he more than makes up for in raw talent and leadership skills.
Seaton is a young emerging leader who has come through the Sandringham Dragons and played for the Zebras in 2019.
He was part of the Dragons leadership group alongside the likes of Bailey Smith, Ben King & Liam Stocker back in 2018.
A skilled and reliable defender, Seaton is an exciting prospect for Sandringham and will add plenty of value to the group.
