Sir Doug Nicholls Round
24/05/2022
This week we celebrate Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
The Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrates and highlights the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to the game of football and to our country. The round celebrates the relationship between the game and Indigenous Australia by connecting AFL fans to Indigenous culture.
This year’s theme we acknowledge the 30th anniversary of the Mabo decision and acknowledge the legacy of this decision and the efforts of the late Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo.
The 2022 Toyota Sir Doug Nicholls Round will be a true celebration of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their contribution to Australian Football, and how players past and present have inspired generations of Australians.
We spoke with our very own Fitzroy Greenwool about what this round means to him.
"I love that this round brings excitement, there are lots of exciting Indigenous players to look up to like Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts. I love connecting with everyone, it's special to be able to share my culture and connect with the boys. It's also good connecting with everyone and their cultures, not just Indigenous culture; it feels good coming together as one. For me, I want to show the way for the younger kids in my community."
