Sunday 28 July will see Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval turn rainbow for the Sandringham Pride Cup.
The 2019 Sandringham Pride Cup will see two Pride Cups being played by VFL and VFLW combatants in Sandringham and Casey (11:40AM), and Southern Saints and Casey (2:40PM) respectively.
The day will also feature a special Pride Cup President’s Brunch from 9:45AM, prior to the VFL match Booran Holden Round 17 between Sandringham and Casey that will be broadcast on Channel 7.
Both Sandringham and Southern Saints will be donning pride guernseys (see above) and the 50 metre arcs will be painted as rainbows.
Sandringham Football Club chief, David Cannizzo, spoke proudly about the initiative of the expanded second Sandringham Pride Cup.
“The Sandringham Football Club strongly embrace diversity and inclusion, where everyone who is involved with the club, either as a player, official, administrator or fan, is free and able to do regardless of their gender or sexuality,” Cannizzo said.
"We are delighted to partner with Pride Cup Australia, St Kilda Football Club and VicHealth to collectively have our Victorian state men’s and women’s teams showcase this important initiative. We want all players, coaches, staff and supporters to feel safe and welcome within our community.”
“Sadly, the statistics in regards to discrimination in sport are far too high and this is something that will only stop through continued efforts to create welcoming environments.”
The Pride Cup is a means of raising awareness for the LGBTIQ+ community and to make everyone feel welcome within the sporting environment. It is about changing the culture of clubs and ensuring that anyone who identifies as LGBTIQ+ feels welcome in any environment.
