Sandringham Hall of Fame Recap
10/06/2019
Ten new inductees have joined the Sandringham Football Club Hall of Fame, as Sandringham celebrate their 90th Anniversary and Hall of Fame induction night.
Former St Kilda great Danny Frawley was the master of ceremonies for the evening, and he kicked proceedings off by welcoming all the guests and acknowledging the importance of the occasion.
Not long after, guests began tucking into their first of the three-courses and taking the opportunity to reminisce with old friends.
There is plenty to reminisce about, as the inductees collectively have served 47 years on the board, have played 675 games, have won two JJ Liston trophies, four Best and Fairests, one Norm Goss Medal, and are representatives from our 1985, 1992, 1994 and 1997 Grand Final triumphs.
The evening had a particular 90's theme, with past premiership players the Rugolo brothers, Steve Crough, Shane Foley, Darren Mitchelson and Premiership coach Trevor Barker all being inducted.
Trevor Barker has been the man of the footy world the past week, as he was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame on Monday night. Norma Barker accepted the award on behalf of her late son and expressed her immense pride in his accomplishments.
Despite Barker’s short tenure at Sandringham, from 1992-1994, his impact has been long lasting. The inductees, many of who played under Barker, fondly recalled the culture that he was instrumental in developing.
Friendship, professionalism and comradery were the words that came to mind for 1994 Premiership Captain Anthony Allen, who was in attendance to accept the induction on behalf of Joe Rugolo and Shane Foley.
The night was also a celebration of Sandringham’s 90th year of existence, which was a fitting time to bring some very important club servants together and to acknowledge their contribution to Sandringham Football Club.
Inductee and former club President, Gerard Ryan, spoke about how important developing a strong club culture was for success. Ryan and the club worked hard on “educating and supporting an environment to create the successful era of Sandringham football club.”
All the inductees shared the sentiment of how important the club has been in their lives and hoped to see the club continue to build a strong legacy into the future.
Congratulations to all the inductees on entering the Sandringham Football Club Hall of Fame. Your efforts have been crucial in forming the fabric and culture of Sandringham Football Club today and your contribution is now immortalised.
