Pride Cup Info and Guernsey Release
05/06/2018
On Sunday the 10th of June, the Sandringham Pride Cup will be played against the Frankston Dolphins, as the inaugural pride game in the VFL.
The Sandringham Pride Cup will be played the day after the AFL Pride Match between St Kilda and Sydney, the perfect way to recover from the festivities following that match. Sandringham players will wear specially designed rainbow-coloured guernseys, and the club will host a themed President’s lunch prior to the first bounce.
St Kilda Football Club’s Sam Gilbert, Victorian Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality Ro Allen, LGBTI+ advocates, Hannah Mouncey and Tynan Winmar, and James Lolicato from Pride Cup Australia will all be in attendance at the lunch as guest speakers.
Sandringham football club chief executive, David Cannizzo, spoke proudly about the initiative of the VFL’s first ever Pride Cup.
“The Sandringham Football Club embraces diversity and inclusion, where everyone who is involved with the club, either as a player, official, administrator or fan, is free and able to do regardless of their sexuality,” Cannizzo said.
Football clubs to their members, are like a family. Sandringham Football Club wants all players, coaches, staff and supporters to feel safe and welcome within their football club, to be their true selves without fear of shame or judgement.
The Pride Cup is a means of raising awareness for the LGBTI+ community and to make everyone feel welcome within the football environment. It is about changing the culture of football clubs all around the state and ensuring that anyone who identifies as LGBTI+ feels welcome at football matches as a player, spectator, coach or support staff.
Trevor Barker Beach Oval will also play host to a curtain raiser. SFNL Division 2 women’s sides South Yarra and Frankston will play prior to the VFL Pride Cup beginning at 11:30am and will be broadcasted live on 88.3 Southern FM.
