Venturing to Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve early Sunday morning, the Southern Saints faced a challenging match-up against the Box Hill Hawks. Despite a brilliant second-quarter comeback, highlighted by a number of exceptional plays, the Saints would ultimately fall short by 11 points.
Battling the wind in the first quarter we took a strong defensive strategy, as Box Hill dominated the early territory and trapped the ball in our back half. Regardless, defensive stalwarts Caitlin Matthews and Georgia Foran would combine for 14 marks to launch several re-bound 50s and limit the damage to a single goal.
Utilising the wind to our advantage in the second quarter, we exerted significant pressure, as our territory and possession dominance began to translate into scoring opportunities.
Maddi Torpey was again instrumental in the middle, as she won a match-high 8 clearances to go along with her 19 disposals. The Saints won the clearance statistics category 30-27.
Abbey Tregellis would coolly slot our first major of the day after a 50m penalty, followed shortly after with the ever-reliable forward Chole Hunt working her opponent under the ball to take an excellent contested mark and record our second major.
Warriors Sophie Phillips and Grace Hodder showcased their tireless contested work, as they shared 16 tackles between them, successfully thwarting numerous Box Hill attempts to penetrate our backline.
While in the end, the Hawks would prove too strong, the cohesiveness of our forward line and its ability to create scoring opportunities was a real positive step, as we demonstrated our ability to compete at a high level.
Box Hill Hawks: 1.0 1.1 3.2 4.5 (29)
Southern Saints: 0.0 2.5 2.5 2.6 (18)
