The Southern Saints trailed by 16 points at the end of Saturday morning after taking on the Casey Demons at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval. Despite the our efforts, especially in the last quarter, the early lead from the Demons was too much to catch up to.
Both teams started tasseling it out in the midfield, neither being able to lock it into their half. The back and forth between both ends eventually resulted in a late goal from the Demons though it was a pretty equal start. Defensive efforts from Deanna Jollife and Natalie Plane prevented a few early goal efforts from the Demons.
Maddison Torpey lead the hit-out count with 29, as well as eight clearances, along with Gabriella De Angelis who lead the Saints' disposal count with 20 each.
A breakthrough in the third quarter when a tackle laid by Charlotte Ryan resulted in a quick handball from Torpey to Plane, scoring our first goal of the game.
Despite the start, our skills were on show in the last quarter, scoring 15 points to the Demons' 7. It was on early with two missed goal attempts however, we were able to lock it in our half. Torpey kicked our second goal from 45m out, after a controlled kick from Boyd in the pocket set her up.
A quick response from Casey, who won the next centre clearance, was stopped by an impressive run down tackle from Jollife, preventing yet another Casey goal attempt. Shortly after, an intercept mark from Georgia Ricardo in the Demons' 50 sent the ball straight back up the Saints way, resulting in a high free kick to Ryan who got our third and final goal.
Throughout the electric second half, the Saints succumbed to a 16 point loss.
