The Southern Saints took on the Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Sunday in their last game of the 2024 rebel VFLW season.
Bouncing back after a loss against Carlton in Round 13, our performance against Casey was dominant, holding the lead for 70 minutes of the game and securing a 16-point victory at the final siren.
After two early goal attempts, and a nifty game-opening goal from the Demons, we responded incredibly quick with Chloe Hunt kicking our first of the game. A kick from Zahlia Clarke set up a shot for Hunt directly in front of goal, giving us a two-point lead at the 11th minute mark. Our midfield was on fire, completely locking it into our forward half for the remainder of the first quarter.
Our midfield connection was put on display in the second, with an intercept from Deanna Jolliffe followed by a handball to Tessa Boyd who set the ball up inside our forward 50 where it ended up in the hands of the leading Abbey Tregellis who converted with an on-the-run goal. We had a few more missed goal opportunities in the second but continued to demonstrate our ability to win contests, turning the ball over before it got into our defensive 50 and moving it into our forward 50.
Sophie Phillips and Hunt kicked back-to-back goals to begin the third quarter, followed by Hunt's third major 10 minutes later.
Boyd opened the fourth term with a quick get away, setting the ball up into our forward 50 which resulted in a free kick to Mel Bertuna. Hunt again was able to dominate the pack, marking the ball directly in front of goal and converting for her fourth, whilst Phillips was the final goal scorer for the day, kicking her second at the 10-minute mark of the final term.
Chloe Hunt finished the day with a game-high four goals and Sophie Phillips followed with two of her own.
Winnie Laing lead our disposal count with 20, followed by Charlotte Ryan and Gabriella De Angelis tied with 18.
Ali Hynes lead the game with a huge 18 tackles as well as 13 hit outs.
Southern Saints 1.3 2.5 5.6 7.8 (50)
Casey Demons 1.0 2.1 4.1 5.4 (34)
