Q1:
Playing at the AIA centre on Sunday morning against Collingwood, who we defeated back in round one, we came out hungry for a win.
Showing dominance early with the first few inside 50s and a strong defensive setup, Abbey Tregellis kicked our first major of the day by running onto the ball inside 50 and slotting it through.
Collingwood responded with a goal of their own before an impressive set shot into the breeze from Georgia Riccardo put us a goal in front heading into quarter time.
Southern Saints 2.2 (14)
Collingwood 1.1 (7)
Q2:
The second quarter saw us again playing a more attacking style of football, as we looked to bring the ball inside 50 and give ourselves scoring opportunities.
Within a minute Courtney Aughtie took a mark inside 50 and lined up for goal, after having her kick smothered, she received hands from Jemima Wrigley and kicked a beautiful snap across the body to record our third goal of the day.
Deanna Jolliffe was a brick wall in our defence, taking multiple intercept marks alongside Tessa Boyd who had a team high 25 disposals and was influential around the contest.
Collingwood managed another goal halfway through the quarter to bring the margin back to three points. Relentless pursuit from Mel Bertuna saw her get an opportunity late in the term, kicking a great set shot goal.
Southern Saints 4.3 (27)
Collingwood 2.5 (17)
Q3:
The second half of the game saw a lot more contested footy with both sides ramping up the pressure as we looked to hold our lead while Collingwood were in the attack.
Our midfielders were strong and their consistent work rate alongside our backline paid off, limiting the opposition to just two behinds for the quarter despite the amount of time spent in our defensive 50.
Winnie Laing showed an impressive display for her 50th VFLW game recording 24 disposals whilst Flik Crank and Grace Hodder shared a team-high eight tackles.
With a nine point lead heading into the final term, the girls were more determined than ever to play out the game and take home their first win since round two.
Southern Saints 4.4 (28)
Collingwood 2.8 (19)
Q4:
The ball spent the first few minutes of the quarter locked in to our forward 50 as we looked to extend our margin.
Ali Hynes was dominant in the ruck with 32 hit outs while Georgia Foran and Charlotte Ryan had effective ball use around the ground finishing with 18 and 17 disposals.
Once again our backline were under fire, with Collingwood desperately attacking the footy and kicking a goal with three minutes left.
With the game on the line, our girls ramped up the pressure and held on to win by three points despite an after the siren free kick outside 50 from Collingwood.
Southern Saints 4.5 (29)
Collingwood 3.8 (26)
