Darby Hipwell continues to shine as he’s crowned the 2023 Neil Bencraft Best & Fairest.
Following his success at last year’s Neil Bencraft Best & Fairest night, Darby Hipwell took out the major prize in 2023 with 58 votes. His best game came in round three against Gold Coast which saw him accumulate 31 disposals and lay eight tackles to accompany two goals.
Following his success at last year’s Neil Bencraft Best & Fairest night, Darby Hipwell took out the major prize in 2023 with 58 votes. His best game came in round three against Gold Coast which saw him accumulate 31 disposals and lay eight tackles to accompany two goals.
Hipwell was also awarded the Ed Hattam Memorial Trophy for the Most Determined Player once again.
The night saw a number of players and staff recognised, also taking time to acknowledge our late Vice-President Dave Burgin.
Last year's winner Tom Campbell finished runner up despite juggling AFL substitute commitments and becoming a father earlier in the year. Campbell also took home the Jack Barker award - gathering the most votes for a Saints-listed player - as his on field presence and leadership continues to inspire the next generation of Zebras.
Speaking of which, Tom Blamires and Tomo Owens found themselves tied for the Ray Patmore Trophy - awarded to the Best First Year Player - with both becoming mainstays in our lineup, playing 12 and 13 games respectively.
Also in his first year at the Zebs, Noah Gown brought his VFL experience and proved a dynamic asset down forward, winning the Leading Goal Kicker Award for 2023, whilst also running through the midfield.
Gown also acquired the Greg Lyons Memorial Trophy for the Most Courageous Player, putting his body on the line at stoppage and bringing a strong presence to every marking contest.
To top off a successful night, he also found himself placing third in the Neil Bencraft Best & Fairest count - a testament to his commitment and drive this season.

Vincent Zagari placed in the top ten, too, and was awarded with the player-voted Zeal Player of the Year award. Zagari was relentless in his pursuit this year, a supportive teammate and displayed strong communication on the field - his value to our group is immense.
He noted the significance of this award within the four walls in his acceptance speech, expressing his gratitude to his teammates.
John Barker, John Newson, Courtney Banks and Andy Farrall were also recognised throughout the night with off-field awards - a testament to their drive, commitment and hard work over not just this year, but countless others.
Gary Gilchrist Award (President’s Award) - John Barker
Extra Mile Award (Donated by Sandringham Sports Physio) - John Newson and Courtney Banks
Eric Mackenzie Memorial Trophy (Best Club Person) - Andy Farrall
