This Saturday’s trip to Preston to take on the Northern Blues presents the Zebras with a big challenge. The Blues have a four-game winning streak and sit one spot above Sandringham on the ladder in third, with only percentage separating the two teams.
Sandy have not overpowered teams thus far this season, but they have been able to grind out wins despite not being at their best. All four of their wins have been by 20 points or less, and last weekend’s win over Coburg was a highlight as they kicked six goals to two in the final quarter to snatch victory.
In a promising sign for St Kilda fans, it was the AFL-listed players who led the way for Sandringham last weekend.
The leading goal-kicker on the day was Paddy McCartin, with four goals. Ben Long and Rowan Marshall were also influential kicking three apiece, as the forward line continued to mesh and look comfortable together.
Daniel McKenzie was Sandringham’s best with 26 touches, and fittingly kicked the goal to put the Zebras on top in the fourth quarter. Watch his highlights here. Nick O’Kearney also had 26 disposals in a promising display, while Shane Savage garnered 33 possessions.
The Northern Blues are coming off a comfortable 55-point win over Casey, where they kicked 12 of the opening 13 goals.
Blaine Boekhorst (#62) and captain Tom Wilson (#1) were Northern’s best, with Boekhorst picking up 27 touches and 6 clearances. Former Giant Kristian Jaksch (#48) was their most effective target up forward with five goals.
In what is shaping up to be a big clash, both clubs will try to keep the heat on the two unbeaten sides of the competition – Port Melbourne and Box Hill.
Northern are up and about after winning four straight games for the first time since 2010, and the Zebras will need to bring their best effort to get a statement win at Preston City Oval.
The development team will also be travelling to Preston to take on the Northern Blues from 11am on Saturday. Sandy’s development squad used a strong second half to put away Coburg by 29 points in their last game.
